IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES



Friends of the Arabic Outreach Center are invited to stop by our table at Central Presbyterian's Holiday Market for some yummy holiday treats!  The AOC will be selling “SNAX IN SACKS” to support our outreach programs.  Stock up on cracker snacks, trail mix, and cookies – perfect for hostess gifts, or for the whole family!  The address is 3829 Grand Avenue in Des Moines.

ARABIC CENTER PROGRAMS AND SERVICES 

The Arabic Outreach Center hopes to resume all in-person services and activities in the fall of 2021.  The AOC plays a key roll in helping the Arabic-speaking community adjust and thrive in American culture. Here is a brief overview of the in-person services provided by the AOC:

•  Outreach Services include translation services, transportation to appointments and referrals to social service agencies community.  Newcomers also receive assistance with food, clothing, household items, baby needs, etc.

•  The Women’s Empowerment Group meets weekly to share experiences, practice English, ask questions, and learn the how-to’s of American culture. With the AOC’s capable leadership, the women supported one another, began to feel comfortable in their new homeland, and even learned to sew, making clothing for themselves and their families

•   The weekly Tutoring Program offers children of refugees and immigrants homework assistance, reading enrichment, social interaction, an dinner

•   ARABIC CLASSES are held to help the children learn their mother tongue, but by popular demand, the weekly classes have expanded to include to anyone interested in learning the language – both children and adults.
